Zinc Die Castings are produced from alloy which offers an excellent balance of physical and mechanical properties, castability, and surface finishing characteristics. In general, thinner sections can be die cast in zinc than in any other commonly used alloy. Zinc No. 3 offers the best combination of these properties: it can produce die castings with intricate detail to closer dimensional tolerances at high production rates. Zn No. 3 is one of the "Zamak" alloys (acronym for zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper).
The impact strength of zinc die castings is higher than other die casting alloys, with the exception of brass. Due to lower production pressures and temperatures required, the die life for zinc die cast component dies is significantly lengthened and die maintenance is minimized.
Thin-wall Zinc Die Casting Technology. CWM was an early adopter in the production of thin-wall zinc die castings. Among the benefits for housings were reduced package sizes at lighter weights, with no loss in chassis strength.
